Patagonia is a vast region in the southern part of South America. It lies at the border with Chile and Argentina. It is home to glaciers and fjords. The oceans that surround the land include the Atlantic, Pacific and Beagle Channel. A large area of the region is under the authority of both countries.

Patagonia gets its name from a Patagonian tribe. Rodrigo de Isla was the first European to reach the vast Patagonian plain. He visited the region in 1535. The Spanish crown had de jure jurisdiction over the region but was not keen on colonizing it. The area had a number of indigenous communities that existed before the boundary treaty of 1715. The Tehuelches were among these. Some indigenous communities survived the European invasion. Others perished. In the 18th century, several coastal settlements were built.

There are two main areas in the province. 90% of the territory is made up by Argentina Patagonia (or Patagonia del sur), with Chile occupying the remaining 10%. The regions have distinct climates and ecological zones, with the Argentine side featuring deserts and grasslands whereas the Chilean side is more temperate with the aptly named Los Lagos region. The Andes Mountains form the boundary between the two regions.

The world's highest mountain, Cerro Chalten also known as Monte Fitz Roy, is found in Patagonia. Many tourists visit the area annually, making it an attractive destination for those who love to ski, climb, or simply enjoy nature. The Magallanes glacier and San Francisco volcano are two other notable landmarks. Winter visitors should prepare for heavy snowfall.

Patagonia also has natural beauty. The region has been the subject of many environmental campaigns, starting with a green tourism campaign in 1990s and continuing to this day. It is a testament to this that the region has been a front runner in the fabled Living Wage movement.
